Detritus

The “Detritus” series, so named for the pearls and ribbons of wax retrieved from previous paintings, herald a time of significant upheaval and change in my life. I was navigating my way out of a long period of deep depression, and dealing with multiple “ends" and new “beginnings” in my journey through life. These highly textured paintings repurpose old remnants into fresh images. The detritus is fixed to a panel covered with several layers of warm wax. Subsequent brushing with diverse color, followed by carving and scraping the surface reveals variegated layers of color. This process is repeated until the painting strikes a chord of completion.

While working on the images, I am reminded of the words of Agnes Martin, “This painting I like because I can get in there and rest”
